IHS Equestrian Team
The Ionia Equestrian Team is available to all students (male and female) who own their own horses or have horses they can use and want to participate in the enjoyment of competition as a team. The club will provide each participant with the opportunities to experience good leadership, fair play, horsemanship, sense of honesty, character, pride and good sportsmanship.
The Equestrian Team is self funded. All participants must pay a State and District fee in order to participate. These fees change from year to year.
The Equestrian Team is a division of the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association (MIHA). We compete in District 19, which means our shows are held at the Barry County Fairgrounds in Hastings, MI. All participants must have their own means of transportation to and from the fairgrounds.
The Equestrian Team competes in three shows. The shows are held the last Saturday in August, the second Saturday of September and the third Saturday of September. If the team is successful at Districts then the team will advance to compete at Regionals. Regionals are also held at the Barry County Fairgrounds and are usually held the first weekend of October. If the team is successful at Regionals then they will advance to compete at State. The date of the State competition will be announced at Regionals and has been held at the Midland County Fairgrounds for the past couple of years.
The Equestrian Team competes in Western, English, Saddleseat and Contesting as well as a pattern class (Reining or Western Riding), Showmanship, and Trail. The club will have riding meets during the later summer months to determine knowledge and ability for class selection. During these riding meets, the coach and her assistants will be giving pointers for areas in improvement. The Equestrian Team will involve each participant to the extent possible in team competition. The participants are encouraged to inform the coach of their desired class selection. However, the coach will place the participants in classes she feels will best benefit the team as a whole. The coach's class selection is final. All participants must be willing to show in their selected classes.
As a division of MIHA, the Equestrian Team must follow and abide by the yearly MIHA Rulebook. You can find the Rulebook on MIHA's Website at www.miha.org.
If you have any questions or if you are interested in joining, please e-mail the coach, Jammie Sprank, at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you do not have the ability to e-mail, please contact the administrative office and they will get you in contact with her.
